ERICA Information

Institutional Review Board

  • About - The IRB is charged with the review of all research projects that involve humans to ensure they comply with local, state, and federal laws, as well as the high ethical standards set forth in University policy.
  • Single IRB (SIRB) - The basis for the Single IRB Model is to allow multiple institutions that are conducting the same protocol to use a single IRB for review, instead of using multiple IRBs to review the research at the sites individually.  The Single IRB Model has been in use for many years, across a wide variety of studies and circumstances.
  • Federated Single Sign-On - In regards to human subject research, NIH and DHHS policy have been updated to enhance and streamline the IRB review process for multi-site research so that research can proceed as quickly as possible without compromising ethical principles and protections for human research participants.  The UU IRB ERICA system has been enhanced to foster collaboration between researchers at any institution to assist them in meeting these regulatory policies.  Research and staff at any site will be able to access and assist with the IRB application and process when utilizing the UU IRB as the IRB for any project.  Allowing external users access to the University of Utah ERICA system improves research collaboration and compliance for multi-center research.
